Abstract:

This qualitative study aimed to correlate malocclusion with breastfeeding, as well as to understand mothers’ perceptions regarding the importance of breastfeeding in the orofacial development of children and to elucidate the reasons why mothers do not exclusively breastfeed or prematurely wean their infants. Data collection was carried out through clinical examinations of children aged 3 to 5 years who attended the Dental Specialties Center of the municipality of Cachoeira. When alterations in the pattern of primary dentition were identified, the mothers were invited to participate in a semi-structured interview addressing questions related to breastfeeding. The criteria used to classify the presence of malocclusions included Baume arch type, canine relationship, overjet measurement, terminal plane relationship of the second primary molars, presence of anterior and/or posterior crossbite, presence of anterior and/or posterior open bite, and overbite. The study population consisted of eight mothers of children treated at the Dental Specialties Center. The results revealed that the interviewed mothers practiced exclusive breastfeeding for an average period of 3.9 months, mainly due to the perception that breast milk was insufficient. In addition, they demonstrated limited knowledge regarding the importance of breastfeeding and its influence on the stomatognathic system. On the other hand, most mothers associated the use of artificial nipples with orofacial alterations in children but reported not having received guidance regarding exclusive breastfeeding, which may have contributed to the early interruption of this practice.
