Abstract:
This article analyzed the Brazilian scientific production on intersexuality published between 2000 and 2025, focusing on the tension between the pathologizing biomedical model and perspectives guided by autonomy and human rights. A qualitative and descriptive bibliographic review was carried out in the SciELO, PePSIC and Google Scholar databases, combining the descriptors intersex, intersexuality and differences of sex development with the terms psychology and depathologization. Of the 412 records retrieved, eleven studies met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed in full. The twenty-five-year time frame was justified by the scarcity of studies outside the biomedical bias. The reading of depathologization drew on the notions of norm, discipline and examination formulated by Foucault in History of Madness and Discipline and Punish. The analysis was organized into three axes: early surgical normalization, professional curiosity as a form of institutional violence, and the depathologization movement. The results indicated that the academic silencing of the subject, the regional concentration of research and the absence of content on bodily diversity in health education sustain care marked by invisibility and embarrassment. The estimated prevalence ranges from 0.018% to 1.7% depending on the definition adopted, so that the counting criterion determines the recognized size of this population. The DSM-5-TR and the ICD-11 kept the variation under diagnostic categories, which strains a clinical practice committed to autonomy. It was concluded that depathologizing listening and the defense of bodily integrity are conditions for ethical psychological care for this population.
